Concert Choir

Length/Credit: Yearlong course/ 1.0 Fine Arts credit

Concert Choir is a large performing ensemble made up of beginning through advanced musicians. Students will sing and perform quality choral literature of the highest level from a large variety of genres, cultures, and styles. There will be an emphasis on building musicianship skills through a program of sight-reading, music theory, ear training, and vocal technique. This group performs at numerous school concerts and festivals throughout the year. 

Open enrollment for grades 9-12.


Vocal Jazz (Jazz Choir) 

Length/Credit: Yearlong course/1.0 Fine Arts credit

Vocal Jazz is a small mixed-voices ensemble for advanced singers and rhythm-section players. Students will rehearse and perform choral works with an emphasis on jazz and contemporary vocal literature. Students will explore vocal improvisation, solo lyric delivery, and jazz fundamentals, and gain experiences singing and performing jazz in its various styles with its foundation in the concepts of swing. Students will progressively build on their skills in proper rehearsal technique, concert/performance etiquette, practice, tone production, balance/blend, intonation, articulation, technical facility, expression, rhythm, sight-reading and repertoire. A high level of sight reading, music theory, ear training, and vocal technique is expected.

Pre-requisite: Audition and teacher approval. 1 year of Concert Choir at IHS or other equivalent. Priority enrollment for those with 1+ year jazz experience at the high school level. 


Chamber Singers (Advanced Treble Choir) 

Length/Credit: Yearlong course/1.0 Fine Arts credit

Chamber singers is a small ensemble for advanced treble singers. Students prepare advanced repertoire for performance at solo and ensemble contest in February and perform at multiple concerts and events as part of the choral program throughout the school year. This ensemble performs the highest level of repertoire composed and arranged for treble voices at the high school and collegiate level and requires a high level of musicianship and vocal technique. 

Pre-requisite: Audition and teacher approval. Previous experience in Concert Choir at IHS or Vocal Jazz is required, or other equivalent. Priority enrollment for those with 1+ years choral experience at the high school level.


Katie Wood has been teaching in Seattle Public Schools as a music educator in K-12 classrooms for over 12 years, most recently as Choral Director at Ingraham High School from 2012-present. Under her direction, the Vocal Music program has grown from 25 to over 80 singers in the past 5 years. The Vocal Music program at Ingraham includes Concert Choir, Chamber Singers (Advanced Treble Chorale) and Vocal Jazz. Katie has a BA in Vocal Performance from the University of Washington and a degree in Education from WWU’s Woodring College of Education, with a K-12 Choral Endorsement. Ms. Wood is a National Board Certified Music Educator and her choirs have received superior ratings at regional festivals (Chamber Singers 2016, 17, 18, 19) (Vocal Jazz AAA Ensemble Winners 2017, 2019). Ms. Wood is honored to have had the opportunity to music direct/vocal coach musical theatre productions at Ingraham since 2015, as her own passion for vocal music was sparked by her exposure to musical theatre at a young age.

When she isn’t singing with her students at school, she enjoys making music with her husband Eric and son, Hank, and is looking forward to sharing her love of music with her daughter who will be joining the family this fall.
